During preconstruction the customer changed the scope of the project
from an extension to the existing school to a new build four-storey, 4FE
SEN Primary School to be built alongside the existing school. The works
include demolition the existing school buildings after the new one is built
to allow for more outdoor playing areas and an ecology garden.
The new building has been designed to have a steel frame, precast
planks and stairs and will be cladded with GBrick. This building has
been a unique challenge for Willmott Dixon as the project started with
6 months’ worth of enabling works, which involved removing 8000 m3
of soil and chalk on over 1000 lorry loads to get down to our foundation
level. To keep the site safe we removed the vast amount of chalk from
site. A soil nailing system has been put in place to hold back the now 5m
high sheer face. The school is located on a challenging tight site and the
school is a live learning environment through out construction.
